Peñíscola
A medieval town with captivating charm...
The city of Peñíscola, located in the north of the Valencian Community, occupies a privileged spot on the Mediterranean. The former residence of Pope Benedict XIII, a 14th-century castle-fortress, stands imposingly on a rocky outcrop that rises 64 meters above the blue sea; it is connected to the mainland by a sandbar that was once swept by waves during storms, turning the walled city into an ephemeral island.
Peñíscola is an idyllic place to spend a few days, where sun and beach tourism blend with cultural and gastronomic experiences. In this beautiful enclave, you will discover a medieval city nestled into the sea, dominated by an impressive Templar Castle surrounded by medieval streets, which surprise you at every turn with unique finds like its blowhole.
The parish church of Santa María, with Gothic tracery from the 15th century in part of it and architectural elements (sculptured corbels) and a door of Romanesque tradition. It was here that Alonso de Borja, a member of the Borja or Borgia family, was appointed bishop, who would later be elected pope under the name Calixtus III.
This beautiful corner of the province of Castellón has a great complement: its nature. Its extensive beaches, such as Playa del Nord, and the welcoming coves of the southern coast blend with the shelter of the imposing Sierra de Irta. An ideal way to explore the latter is by delving into its hiking trails, where you may even come across historical monuments like the Tower of Badum.
Peñíscola on screen: Its strategic location has made it a privileged setting for both television and film productions. Some examples include its appearance in “Chiringuito de Pepe” or the famous series “Game of Thrones.” Patron Saint Festivities: In September in honor of the Virgin of the Ermitana.
